Why Do Mandarin Speakers Struggle with English Pronunciation?
What This Guide Is For
Know the goal first so you know what you do not need to memorize.
Newborn babies can distinguish all human phonemes. As we grow, the brain becomes precise at the categories in our native language and less sensitive to distinctions outside them. Hearing is not a recorder; it is a classifier. The categories your Mandarin-speaking brain has built affect what you think you heard.
Sound discrimination can be retrained. Immersion often strengthens it, but explicit phonetic information makes the process more dependable: once you know two sounds exist, you can notice both in real input.
Phonetic symbols are not something to memorize. They help your ear create more categories.
If your ear cannot separate two sounds, let your mouth separate them first.
By the end, you need to do only three things
- Know that spelling and sound are not the same thing.
- Know that your native language affects what you think you heard.
- When English is unclear, ask: “Which sound did I miss?”
Letters Are Not Sounds
The same four letters have six pronunciations.
The reverse also happens: to, too, and two have different spellings but the same sound. English spelling is a historical fossil with only a loose relationship to pronunciation. Do not guess a new word's pronunciation from its spelling; check its phonetic transcription.
- Vowelsyllable center
- A sound that can form the center of a syllable; air flows freely through an open mouth.
- Consonantairflow obstruction
- A sound made by obstructing the airflow with the lips, tongue, or teeth.
- Syllableone vowel nucleus
- A vowel together with any consonants attached around it. Count the vowels you hear, not the vowel letters you see.
strengths /strɛŋkθs/ and stopped /stɑpt/ each contain only one syllable. This density is why English sounds packed and why Mandarin speakers may insert an extra vowel after a consonant.
Test Your Ear Once
Remove context and find out what your ear can genuinely distinguish.
Each item differs by one sound. Context, images, and sentence meaning are removed because they can conceal a missing sound category.
Listening Check

Why You Hear the Wrong Sound
Every language divides continuous sound into a finite set of categories.
- Consonants absent from Mandarin: θ, ð, v, z, and ʒ are often replaced with the nearest existing sounds.
- Vowel contrasts absent from Mandarin: /i/ and /ɪ/ differ in muscular tension, but Mandarin has only the first category.
- Different syllable structure: final consonants may disappear or acquire an extra vowel.
- Stronger vowel reduction: many unstressed syllables move toward /ə/, making ordinary speech seem fast.
- No r-colored vowel category: /ɚ/ and /ɝ/ may be heard as vowels without r-coloring.
When Your Ear Cannot Separate Them, Use Your Mouth
You can build a sound category through production as well as perception.
Mouth movements can be described in words, so you do not need to hear a contrast first. To produce /θ/, put the tongue tip between the upper and lower teeth. Once your body has two distinct movements as anchors, your ear has somewhere to place each sound.

Two Types of Blind Spot
The 13 blind spots below are two different problems and call for two different questions.
Sounds You May Hear as the Same
Your brain may sort two distinct English sounds into a single category, making them sound identical.
Signals You May Miss Entirely
The sound is present, but your brain misses it entirely. The signal is lost rather than merged with another sound.
A Map of the Phonemes
This is a reference map, not a syllabus. Return whenever you meet an unfamiliar symbol.
Stops
Close both lips, then release them. Aspirate at the beginning of a stressed syllable and complete the release at the end.
Common spellings p, pp
Use the same position as /p/, but vibrate the vocal folds.
Common spellings b, bb
Touch the gum ridge with the tongue tip. Between vowels in American English, it often becomes a quick tap.
Common spellings t, tt, -ed
Use the same position as /t/, with voicing.
Common spellings d, dd, -ed
Raise the back of the tongue against the soft palate.
Common spellings k, c, ck, ch
Use the same position as /k/, with voicing. Final /ɡ/ is often missed.
Common spellings g, gg, gh
Affricates
Begin with a stop and release into a sh-like sound, with the lips slightly rounded.
Common spellings ch, tch, -ture
The voiced counterpart of /tʃ/; Mandarin speakers often replace it with /tʃ/.
Common spellings j, g, dge
Fricatives
Touch the lower lip lightly with the upper teeth and let air pass.
Common spellings f, ph, gh
Use the same position as /f/, with voicing. Do not replace it with /w/.
Common spellings v, f
Place the tongue tip between the teeth and release air without voicing.
Common spellings th
The voiced counterpart of /θ/, heard in the, that, and they.
Common spellings th
Direct a narrow stream of air past the gum ridge.
Common spellings s, c, ss
The voiced counterpart of /s/. Many final spellings in -s are pronounced /z/.
Common spellings z, s
Make a sh sound with the lips slightly rounded.
Common spellings sh, ti, ss
The voiced counterpart of /ʃ/; it occurs in a small number of words.
Common spellings s, g
Release air through an open throat without friction.
Common spellings h, wh
Nasals
Close both lips and let the sound pass through the nose. Mandarin has no final /m/, so make sure the lips close.
Common spellings m, mm
Touch the gum ridge with the tongue tip, including at the end of a word.
Common spellings n, nn, kn
Raise the back of the tongue and keep the tip free; this distinguishes it from /n/.
Common spellings ng, n+k/g
Liquids & Glides
Touch the gum ridge with the tongue tip. Final dark L may sound almost like an o.
Common spellings l, ll
Curl or bunch the tongue without touching the roof of the mouth.
Common spellings r, rr, wr
Round both lips, then release them.
Common spellings w, wh, qu
Begin with the tongue high and front, like the start of yes.
Common spellings y, u, i
Monophthongs
Pull the corners of the mouth sideways and keep the vowel tense.
Common spellings ee, ea, e, y
Relax the mouth. The difference from /i/ is tension, not duration.
Common spellings i, y, u
Use a mid-front vowel with a moderate mouth opening.
Common spellings e, ea
Drop the jaw and open the mouth wide; Mandarin has no equivalent category.
Common spellings a
Keep the mouth nearly still and make the vowel short and light. Most unstressed English vowels move toward this sound.
Common spellings any spelling
Keep the mouth only slightly open. The sound is short and light but stressed.
Common spellings u, o, ou
Open the mouth wide, as if a doctor were examining your throat.
Common spellings o, a
Round and project the lips. Many Americans merge this sound with /ɑ/.
Common spellings ou, au, aw, o
Use a relaxed, less rounded version of /u/.
Common spellings oo, u, ou
Round the lips and project them forward.
Common spellings oo, u, ew
Diphthongs
Glide from /e/ toward /ɪ/.
Common spellings a, ai, ay
Glide from /ɑ/ toward /ɪ/.
Common spellings i, y, igh
Glide from /ɔ/ toward /ɪ/.
Common spellings oy, oi
Glide from /o/ toward /ʊ/.
Common spellings o, oa, ow
Glide from /ɑ/ toward /ʊ/.
Common spellings ou, ow
R-colored Vowels
An unstressed r-colored vowel. It is the unstressed counterpart of /ɝ/.
Common spellings er, or, ar
The stressed r-colored vowel, produced with the tongue curled or bunched.
Common spellings ir, ur, ear
Produce /ɑ/ and add r-coloring.
Common spellings ar
Produce /ɔ/ and add r-coloring.
Common spellings or, oor, our
Produce /ɛ/ and add r-coloring.
Common spellings air, are, ere
Flap T
Between vowels, American /t/ and /d/ often become a quick tap. The spelling still shows t, but a clear t is not what you hear.
Dark L
Final or pre-consonantal l is velarized and can sound almost like an o. It may also seem to disappear.
An Inserted T before S
A /t/ may appear between /n/ and /s/: sense, prince, and tense can sound like cents, prints, and tents.
Three Pronunciations of -s and -ed
Final -s is pronounced /s/, /z/, or /ɪz/; final -ed is /t/, /d/, or /ɪd/. The preceding sound determines the pronunciation.
You do not need to recite all 44 symbols. The value of transcription is that it reveals mistakes you did not know you were making and gives you a specific distinction to notice during immersion.
